How to Re-Baseline

This video will show you when to consider re-baselining and how to create a new baseline schedule.

When to Rebaseline

If there are a considerable amount of changes in activities in a schedule update, this is when you should consider creating a new baseline schedule. Below are the common reasons to rebaseline:

  • Heavy Resequencing
  • Significant Change Order
  • Time Extension
  • Pull Planning or Considerable Detailing
  • Marked Schedule Quality Improvement

How to Look at the Changes in Activities:

  1. On the Dashboard, click on “View Trends”
  2. Scroll down until you see the “Schedule Changes Over Time” graph. If you see a huge peak of changes, this is a good time to re-baseline.

How to Re-Baseline

  1. On the Dashboard, click on the project name
  2. Click on “Rebaseline” under the “Modeling” Menu on the left hand side of the project Workspace
    1. Enter a name for your baseline in the "Baseline Name" box
    2. Select the schedule you want to use for your new baseline by selecting the radio button to the left of the schedule
    3. Click Save
    4. Now this will be your baseline moving forward and all of the analysis will reflect the new baseline.
    5. Click the “Mark as Primary” button and click the yes button so that this will be your default scenario in SmartPM
    6. You can also select any of your milestones to be your default scenario by selecting the radio button to the left of the milestone, selecting the “Mark as Primary” button and selecting the Yes button.

SmartPM will run an analysis and you will receive an email when it is finished. You will see the analysis for all of the milestones you selected to track.

See the Re-baseline

  2. Click on “Rebaseline” under the “Modeling” Menu on the left hand side of the project Workspace and you will see a bookmark icon (instead of a circular radio button) which indicates the new baseline schedule.

To go back to Original baseline:

If you want to track back to your original schedule, you can do that.
